You don’t have to be a Zen Buddhist to learn a great deal from the just-released “Gardening at the Dragon’s Gate,” by Wendy Johnson (Bantam, $25 paper). Johnson, one of the founders of the organic Farm and Garden Program at Green Gulch Zen Center in California.

Johnson worked for a quarter century at Green Gulch Garden and this is her memoir, which includes gardening techniques, vegetarian recipes and good old garden philosophy. It’s just right for the upcoming gardening season and beautifully illustrated by David Te Selle.
